For Filipinos working thousands of miles away from their families, home is not always a place they can easily return to. Sometimes, it is a familiar meal, the taste of a childhood favorite, or the food traditionally shared during family gatherings.
This connection between food and home is what Filipino food manufacturer Mekeni Food Corporation seeks to bring to Taiwan as it celebrates four decades of serving Filipino families.
Through its engagement with the Filipino community at the OWWA OFW Global Center in Taipei and its participation in the 2026 World in Pingtung – International Market, Mekeni is taking its products beyond Philippine shores, reaching overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) while introducing Filipino flavors to Taiwanese consumers.
More than an expansion of its international presence, the initiative highlights how Filipino food can serve as a cultural connection between communities, preserving familiar traditions for Filipinos abroad while opening opportunities for local products to reach new markets.

More Than Food: A Connection to Home
For many OFWs, living abroad means adjusting to a different culture, environment, and way of life. Amid these changes, familiar food can provide a sense of comfort and continuity.
A serving of tocino at breakfast or hotdogs reminiscent of childhood meals can bring back memories of family routines and celebrations that remain part of a Filipino’s identity, even while living overseas.
Mekeni’s engagement at the OWWA OFW Global Center in Taipei sought to bring these familiar experiences closer to Filipinos in Taiwan, reinforcing the role of Filipino products in maintaining connections to home.
“As we celebrate 40 years of Mekeni, we are reminded that our success is rooted in the families and communities that have welcomed us into their lives,” said Mekeni President Pruds Garcia.
“Bringing our products closer to Filipinos in Taiwan is our way of making them feel that, even when they are far from home, a familiar taste can still bring them closer to the people and memories they cherish.”
The initiative reflects an opportunity for homegrown brands to serve not only the practical needs of overseas Filipinos but also their desire to remain connected to the traditions and experiences that shaped them.
Filipino Food as a Bridge Between Cultures
While reconnecting Filipinos with familiar flavors remains a central part of the initiative, Mekeni’s participation in the 2026 World in Pingtung – International Market also provided an opportunity to introduce its products to Taiwanese consumers.
The event allowed fairgoers to encounter Filipino food favorites, including Picnic Hotdogs and Classic Tocino, offering a glimpse into the flavors commonly found in Filipino households.
Such initiatives underscore the potential of food to encourage cultural exchange. A product that carries familiar memories for one community can become a new discovery for another, creating opportunities for people to learn about different food traditions through everyday experiences.
For Filipino food manufacturers, reaching international audiences involves more than making products available overseas. It also means introducing local flavors to consumers who may be unfamiliar with them and building recognition beyond the Filipino diaspora.
Mekeni’s Taiwan activities reflect this dual opportunity: strengthening its connection with Filipinos abroad while exploring the broader appeal of Filipino food in international markets.
“Our participation in Taiwan allows us to bring Filipino food closer to our kababayans while introducing our products to new consumers,” said Marilou Uy, Mekeni’s assistant vice president for human resources and exports.
“We see this as an opportunity to build meaningful connections, understand the market, and share the quality and flavors that Filipino families have come to know and love.”
Four Decades of Filipino Enterprise
Founded in 1986 in Porac, Pampanga, Mekeni has grown from its local beginnings into a Filipino food company with a presence in more than 25 countries, according to the company.
Its international activities come as it marks its 40th anniversary under the theme “May Kwento sa Bawat Timpla,” highlighting the memories, relationships, and experiences associated with food across generations.
The milestone also offers a broader perspective on the role of homegrown enterprises in bringing Filipino products and food traditions to international markets.
For companies seeking to establish themselves abroad, the challenge extends beyond product distribution. They must also build consumer confidence, understand local preferences, and demonstrate that Filipino-made products can find a place in markets with different tastes and expectations.
Mekeni’s initiatives in Taiwan provide an opportunity to pursue these objectives while carrying forward the legacy of its founders, Felix and Meding Garcia.
Its expanding international reach reflects the company’s ambition to become a globally trusted Filipino brand serving families across generations.
Bringing the Filipino Story to the World
Mekeni’s presence in Taiwan illustrates how a homegrown food brand can pursue two goals at once: helping overseas Filipinos maintain a connection to home and introducing Filipino food to consumers from another culture.
The long-term significance of such initiatives will depend on the company’s ability to sustain market access, build consumer familiarity, and turn initial product encounters into lasting demand.
Still, the underlying idea remains clear. Food can carry more than flavor; it can carry memories, traditions, and stories that travel with people wherever they go.
As Mekeni marks four decades in the industry, its Taiwan initiatives represent another chapter in its effort to bring Filipino flavors to a wider audience.
For Filipinos far from home, that effort may begin with something as simple as a familiar taste. For Taiwanese consumers, it may be the beginning of discovering a new food tradition.
And for a homegrown Filipino brand, it is an opportunity to show that the country’s food story can reach beyond its borders—one product, one family, and one shared experience at a time.
