Mayor Angelo “Gel” Alonte shared the city government’s plan to implement AI-powered traffic lights as part of Biñan’s Smart City Master Plan, during a press briefing held after the first Grand People’s Parade in celebration of Araw ng Biñan 2026.

Mayor Alonte said the project aims to improve traffic flow, enhance road safety, and make traffic management more efficient through the use of advanced technology.

The mayor shared that the concept of AI-powered traffic lights was inspired by their participation in a seminar in Taiwan, which he attended together with Vice Mayor Dada Alonte.

“When we attended a seminar in Taiwan with Vice Mayor Dada, we saw the importance of security and the entire system. All major streets of the city will be equipped, especially at traffic light intersections,” Mayor Alonte said.

He added that the system will require a lower cost compared to traditional traffic management solutions, while providing greater long-term benefits by allowing traffic signals to adjust in real time based on actual road conditions.

“This will be more cost-efficient and beneficial for the city. This is included in the first batch of projects that we will put out for bidding this year,” he added.

Mayor Alonte emphasized that the Smart City Master Plan goes beyond technology and focuses on improving the quality of life of residents.

“This Smart City Master Plan is not just about technology. It is about creating a safer, more efficient, and more livable city for every Biñanense,” the mayor said.

Once implemented, the project could make Biñan the first city in Laguna to deploy AI-powered traffic lights, potentially setting a benchmark for other local government units in the province.
