GENERAL SANTOS CITY — In Barangay San Jose, a remarkable story of determination and grit unfolds in the life of Niño de Guzman, a vocational graduate, husband, and father of three, who turned his modest beginnings into a thriving agribusiness venture that now benefits not just his family but his entire community.
Raised in a family of farmers and fishers, Niño grew up with a deep appreciation for the land and the values of perseverance and hard work. These early lessons in agriculture laid the foundation for his future success.
Starting Small, Dreaming Big
Before fully diving into farming, Niño explored various ways to earn a living. He sold fish and took on several small jobs to support his growing family. For two years, he worked at an automotive company while his wife managed their small sari-sari store. But his passion for agriculture never waned.
With limited capital but a strong desire to succeed, he began farming high-value crops like asparagus and sweet and purple corn. What started as a small venture has since grown into a profitable agribusiness.
“In doing business, it’s important to separate personal matters from business,” Niño shared, emphasizing one of the key lessons that helped him thrive.
Resilience Amid Challenges
Like many farmers, Niño has faced the unpredictable challenges of agriculture, including natural disasters and financial constraints. But through careful planning, a positive outlook, and sustainable practices, he has weathered many storms.
“In times of calamities, it is essential to have savings, so you have something to use when things get tough,” he advised.
A significant turning point in his journey came through his six-year partnership with CARD SME Bank, a thrift bank under CARD MRI. Starting with a modest PHP 3,000 loan, Niño gradually increased his credit line to PHP 350,000—funds that he reinvested into growing his farm and improving operations.
Today, his farm supplies produce not only to General Santos City but also to Cotabato, Davao, and even Manila. His business now employs 15 local workers and earns at least PHP 150,000 monthly—a far cry from where he started.
“We stayed consistent and committed because we saw how the business changed our lives,” he said.
Empowering the Community
More than a successful farmer, Niño is now a key contributor to his community. He actively supports local seed producers by sourcing from them and continuously creates job opportunities for residents in his area.
“As a way of giving back, we support local seed producers by buying seeds from them and providing jobs to the local community,” he explained.
Looking Ahead
Niño envisions further expanding his farm and eventually securing a comfortable retirement for his family. But beyond personal success, his greater goal is to inspire others and continue uplifting his community.
“To aspiring entrepreneurs, especially those from humble beginnings—if you don’t try, you will never see success in life. Despite life’s challenges, if you persevere, nothing is impossible,” he concluded.
