The Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA) has expressed full support for the Pakil Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Power Project, a major energy infrastructure development expected to strengthen the country’s power system and support renewable energy integration.

LLDA General Manager Engr. Leopoldo Parumog conveyed the agency’s support during a site visit on October 23, where he received a project briefing and inspected the facility’s upper basin.

“I’m happy to know and witness what is going on here. Full support naman ang LLDA sa project na ito,” Parumog said.

The project is being developed by Ahunan Power Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Prime Infra. Once operational, it is designed to provide an energy storage capacity of 14,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) and a generating capacity of 1,400 megawatts (MW).

Unlike conventional power plants that primarily generate electricity from fuel or natural resources, a pumped storage facility stores energy by pumping water into an upper reservoir when electricity demand is low. The stored water is then released to generate power when demand rises.

This technology is expected to help stabilize the power grid and accommodate a greater share of renewable energy in the country’s electricity supply.

The Philippine government has recognized the Pakil Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Power Project as an Energy Project of National Significance, underscoring its potential role in the country’s long-term energy security.

For Parumog, seeing the scale of the development firsthand was a remarkable experience.

“If I had been given the chance to work here as an engineer, I’d be happy to do that. Ngayon lang ako makaka-experience ng ganitong kalaking project,” he added.

The site visit also highlighted the importance of coordination between government agencies and private developers as the project moves forward, particularly in relation to Laguna de Bay and surrounding communities.

Ahunan Power Inc. President Noel Gonzales emphasized the importance of protecting the lake while developing infrastructure intended to address the country’s energy needs.

“Prime Infra and Ahunan recognize the significance of the lake as vital to our Pakil Pumped Storage Project. As developer and operator of sustainable infrastructure projects, we capitalize on indigenous sources and work in harmony with nature to help build resilience and address urgent priorities facing many communities,” Gonzales said.

Beyond the energy project, Ahunan Power Inc. and Prime Infra Foundation also turned over 100 packs of rice to the LLDA for distribution to fisherfolk communities around Laguna de Bay.
Gonzales said the companies share a vision of supporting regional development through infrastructure investments and community assistance programs.

The visit brought together representatives from the LLDA, Ahunan Power Inc., and Prime Infra Foundation, highlighting the role of public-private coordination in advancing energy infrastructure while recognizing environmental concerns and the needs of communities around the lake.
