Former Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. stood as a towering presence in Philippine politicsโrenowned for his vision, statesmanship, and lifelong commitment to public service. Serving five terms as Speaker of the House, he played a pivotal role in strengthening our democratic institutions and consistently championed peace, dialogue, and cooperation, both within the country and on the global stage.
During my time as Senate President, we adopted Senate Resolution No. 1142 to honor his life and legacy. It was a formal acknowledgment of his lasting contributions to the nationโhis leadership in governance, his trailblazing work in international diplomacy, and his unwavering dedication to the Filipino people.
I vividly remember my early days as a neophyte member of the House of Representatives, when Speaker de Venecia treated me with fatherly guidance. He mentored younger legislators with patience and wisdom, offering advice that was grounded, generous, and inspiring. His leadership was rooted in the belief that true public service includes nurturing others to lead with integrity and foresight.
As we honor his memory, I extend my deepest sympathies to his beloved wife, Rep. Gina de Venecia, and to their family. We remember not only the positions he held, but the values he lived by.
May his life continue to inspire future generations to choose dialogue over division, vision over discord, and service over self-interest.
Maraming salamat sa iyong paninilbihan sa bayan, Manong Joe. Nawaโy mamahinga ka sa kapayapaan.
