Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero has called on government agencies to strengthen and synchronize protection measures for Filipinos across the Middle East, highlighting the more than 2.2 million Filipinos living and working in the region, including over 1,100 currently in Iran who could be affected by escalating tensions following recent strikes near Iranian territory.

He stressed that the large Filipino population in the region requires an urgent and proactive response. Escudero acknowledged President Bongbong Marcos’ directive to the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Migrant Workers to activate contingency plans and account for Filipinos in affected areas. He described the move as timely, noting that Saudi Arabia hosts more than 865,000 Filipinos, the UAE nearly 650,000, with sizable communities also in Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Oman that may be impacted by any regional spillover.

However, Escudero emphasized that advisories alone are insufficient given the potential risks. With millions of Filipino families relying on loved ones abroad, he urged a more unified and forward-looking strategy to ensure embassies, welfare officers, and crisis teams share synchronized information and follow clear protocols if conditions worsen.

The senator proposed establishing a coordinated Middle East Crisis Command Center to centralize real-time monitoring, identify safe corridors, and pre-position evacuation assets in accessible ports or airports. He also called for assistance to Filipino travelers who may be stranded due to flight cancellations, ensuring they receive prompt guidance, temporary support, and clear information on alternative routes or repatriation options.

Escudero noted that such a mechanism is a prudent safeguard, particularly for overseas Filipino workers in high-risk areas such as Israel and Iran, where mobility and communication could be disrupted. He also underscored the importance of reliable communication channels, including emergency hotlines, check-in systems, and temporary connectivity support for workers in sectors with limited mobility like domestic service, construction, and caregiving.

A long-time advocate for overseas Filipino workers, Escudero reiterated that safeguarding Filipinos abroad must remain a national priority, recognizing their vital contribution to the Philippine economy. He affirmed his readiness to work closely with foreign and migrant-worker agencies to ensure every Filipino in the region is accounted for, protected, and supported.
