The Sandiganbayan has cancelled the cash bonds of Pagsanjan Mayor Jeorge “ER” Ejercito Estregan and his co-accused Marilyn Bruel, following the finality of their conviction for graft. The court has given them five days upon receipt of the order to voluntarily surrender.
According to the resolution, if Ejercito and Bruel fail to surrender within five days, a warrant of arrest will be issued against them. The order directs the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) to enforce the arrest.
Should the PNP be unable to implement the arrest, the warrant must be returned unserved with reasons indicated in the report. The Sandiganbayan will then issue an alias warrant of arrest, which has no prescriptive period, meaning Ejercito and Bruel may be arrested at any time once found.
Furthermore, the cancelled cash bonds will be forfeited in favor of the government, in accordance with the court’s order.
This development follows the Supreme Court’s final ruling affirming the graft conviction of Ejercito and Bruel over the irregular awarding of an accident insurance contract for tourists and boat operators in Pagsanjan to a firm without proper authorization from the Insurance Commission.
