In a major step toward climate action and sustainable campus operations, Mapúa Malayan Colleges Laguna (Mapúa MCL) has officially transitioned to 100% renewable energy, partnering with ACEN Renewable Energy Solutions (ACEN RES) — the retail electricity arm of the Ayala Group’s listed energy platform, ACEN.
The move marks a significant milestone in the institution’s green agenda and reinforces its commitment to lowering its carbon footprint. Under the new agreement, Mapúa MCL will source all its electricity from ACEN’s portfolio of renewable energy facilities, making it one of the few academic institutions in the region to operate entirely on clean energy.
Driving Carbon Reduction and Climate Responsibility
This renewable energy shift is part of Mapúa MCL’s broader strategy to reduce its carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) emissions by 5% by the end of 2025, with a target of 10% reduction by 2026. The transition was spearheaded by the Institute for Global Sustainability (IGS), a campus center for sustainability and development established in August 2024.
“The ceremonial switch highlights our strong commitment to minimizing our carbon footprint,” said Assistant Vice President Rolando V. Bitor, Director of Mapúa MCL’s IGS. “Because energy use is one of the largest contributors to institutional emissions, this transition to renewable energy brings us closer to our climate goals.”

Reliable Renewable Energy for a Tech-Driven Campus
ACEN RES was selected for its consistent and diverse supply of renewable energy across the Philippines. With Mapúa MCL’s operations heavily reliant on electricity for online and on-site learning, IT infrastructure, and campus systems, energy reliability was a key consideration in the transition.
“We are proud to support Mapúa MCL in its bold shift to renewable energy,” said Engr. Sheila Mina, Vice President and Head of Account Management at ACEN RES. “Educational institutions are uniquely positioned to lead climate action. By choosing renewables, Mapúa MCL sets a powerful example in the academic sector.”
A Campus Committed to Sustainability
The switch to green energy is just one of several projects under Mapúa MCL’s sustainability plan. In celebration of Earth Month 2025, the IGS organized various campus-wide environmental initiatives, including:
- Earth Hour observance
- “E-lluminate: E-Waste Drive for Solar Energy” in partnership with e-waste recycler HMR
- Promotion of the Renewable Energy Petition
- Benchmarking with Western Sydney University, ranked #1 globally in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings since 2022
- Earth Day Fair featuring online and onsite workshops on the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), climate change, and local ecological issues
These efforts reflect Mapúa MCL’s integrated approach to sustainability — combining operational transformation with education and community engagement.

Aligning with Global Goals
Mapúa MCL’s renewable energy initiative supports several of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), particularly:
- SDG 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy
- SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production
- SDG 13 – Climate Action
- SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals
With this partnership with ACEN RES, Mapúa MCL is well on track to exceed its emission reduction goals and serve as a model for sustainable education in the Philippines.
