Mary Jane Veloso, an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) whose story has resonated with millions, marked her 40th birthday today. Her family, led by her parents, Nanay Celia and Tatay Cesar, gathered outside the Correctional Institution for Women in Mandaluyong City. The OFW Party List joined the celebration, providing financial assistance and a birthday cake as a show of solidarity.

Veloso was arrested in Indonesia in 2010 after unknowingly carrying a suitcase containing illegal drugs. She has consistently claimed to be a victim of human trafficking, deceived by her recruiter. Initially sentenced to death, her execution was postponed in 2015 following widespread public outcry and diplomatic efforts. After spending more than a decade in an Indonesian prison, Veloso was repatriated to the Philippines, where she remains in custody while awaiting the resolution of her case and a possible pardon from President Marcos.

Representatives from the OFW Party List, Migrante International, and Bayan Muna stood alongside Veloso’s family during the celebration. Rep. Marissa “Del Mar” Magsino reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Veloso and other OFWs facing similar challenges.

“On her 40th birthday, we stand with her family and all advocates in renewing the call for justice,” Rep. Magsino said in a statement. “We are also thankful for the tireless efforts of Migrante International and Bayan Muna, who have been unwavering in their support for Mary Jane’s fight.”

In October 2022, OFW Party List Rep. Magsino travelled to Indonesia to discuss Mary Jane Veloso’s case with embassy officials and Filipino Community Leaders providing assistance to her.

The OFW Party List reiterated its commitment to advocate for the protection and welfare of OFWs, especially those vulnerable to human trafficking and exploitation.
