Mega Sardines marks 50 years of nutritious meals, sets sights on global expansion
Mega Prime Foods Inc., the company behind the iconic Mega Sardines brand, is celebrating its 50th anniversary by reaffirming its commitment to health, innovation, and social responsibility—while setting its sights on the global stage.
Founded in the 1970s with a mission to provide affordable, nutritious meals to Filipino families, the company has grown from a modest fishing operation into one of Southeast Asia’s leading food manufacturers. Today, Mega Prime Foods produces over 3 million cans of sardines daily, with operations anchored in its world-class facilities in Batangas and Zamboanga.
Sardines have long been a staple in Filipino kitchens—not just for affordability, but for their nutritional value. Rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin B12, calcium, and other essential nutrients, sardines are among the world’s most nutrient-dense foods. Mega’s industry-leading “catch-to-can in 12 hours” process preserves these health benefits, setting the brand apart in freshness and quality.
“Our fish go from sea to can in just 12 hours, compared to the industry standard of one to three days. That’s our competitive edge,” said Chairman and Founder William Tiu Lim, who has led the company through decades of challenges, including natural disasters and economic downturns.
Through it all, Mega Prime Foods has remained anchored in its core values: Quality, Innovation, and Malasakit—a Filipino term that means deep empathy and concern for others.
This unwavering commitment was recently recognized on the international stage when Mega Sardines was named the world’s first seafood “Superfood” by the U.S.-based Medical Wellness Association (MWA). The honor was announced during the company’s golden anniversary celebration by MWA Board Member James Michael Lafferty.
“Mega Sardines earned this recognition for its commitment to quality and health,” said Lafferty. “It’s a groundbreaking moment for both the company and the global food industry.”
As Mega transitions to its second generation of leadership, President and CEO Michelle Tiu Lim-Chan is steering the company toward international markets—while staying true to its people-first philosophy.
“Our mission is about more than just expansion,” said Lim-Chan. “We serve our consumers with care, support our employees, and invest in community well-being. Growth should always be guided by purpose.”
Beyond sardines, Mega Prime Foods has broadened its product portfolio to include tuna, mackerel, fruit cocktails, coconut gel, Primo non-alcoholic sparkling juices, and Jimm’s Coffee, a functional beverage brand.
“Our greatest accomplishment is turning compassion into quality products that improve lives,” said Lim-Chan. “We’re only getting started. The next 50 years will be even more transformative.”
